Tasmanian Devil
The Tasmanian Devil is not just a cartoon character, it’s a real animal found on the Australian island of Tasmania. About the size of a small dog, the Tasmanian Devil is a particularly stinky animal which barks, snorts, growls, screeches and is known for its spine-chilling screams. When it bites, it has the most powerful bite per unit of body mass of any living mammal and they feed on other animals. Tasmanian Devils can climb trees, swim, and move quickly. A fickle animal, they do not mate for life but move from partner to partner. Like the kangaroo, they are marsupials with pouches for their offspring which are called “joeys”, “pups” or “imps.” An average litter has 20-50 pups smaller than a raisin but the mama devil only has four nipples so competition is fierce and usually only 2 or 3 survive. A Tasmanian Devil has a lifespan of 8 years if they can avoid becoming road kill, human capture, and disease. Tasmanian Devils are meat-eaters and will feed mostly on the bodies of dead people or animals that they happen across, giving them the name “vacuum cleaners of the forest.” They are ferocious fighters which gave them the name “devil” and even when not fighting, are cantankerous creatures. The Tasmanian Devil is considered an endangered species.
