A creature of myth and legend, the Jersey Devil is said to live in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. Described as having wings, hooves, horns, glowing red eyes, a forked tail and the head of a horse in some accounts, the Jersey Devil has been known since the 1700s. The thirteenth child of Deborah Leeds born in 1735, the child was said to be invoked by the devil and hideously deformed. Witches and curses abounded in the 1700s and a simple birth defect may have been all it took for the legend to be born. The devil-child escaped from the house and flew off into the swamps, according to legend. Or perhaps mama just killed her hideous offspring and buried him in secret, spinning a wild tale of Satan taking his offspring away.

Also called the Leeds Devil, Wozzle Bug and Hoodle-Doodle Bird, the Jersey Devil has roamed the Pine Barrens woodlands of New Jersey for centuries. A fisherman in 1870 spotted the Jersey Devil singing to a mermaid. In 1909, councilman E.P. Weeden awoke to a loud flapping of the wings outside of his window and found cloven footprints the next morning. Hundreds of other sightings were reported shortly thereafter and the resulting panic caused schools and businesses to be shut down. Two boys encountered the Jersey Devil in 1978 describing it as having two red eyes and stinking like dead fish. His blood curdling cries have been heard in the woods for generations. Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother witnessed the Jersey Devil during a hunt in 1820.
