Known as early as 1831, the Dark Horse denotes one who starts out trailing far behind the rest, but who might just surprise you by catching up and winning the race. Most races, whether they be political campaigns, horse races or any other competitive event, have the favorites who are expected to win and the longshots who aren’t. Abraham Lincoln was considered a Dark Horse, and so was George Harrison of The Beatles who named his solo record label Dark Horse Records, and released both an album and a song called Dark Horse.
